I can't find the link, but there was a story a day or two reporting on John Ashcroft's views on intrusive government surveillance back when he wasn't anyone's AG during the Clinton years.
Amazingly enough, he wasn't all that gung-ho for it.{
Sure. Poor people should pay more taxes, because they're using more government services. How many rich people do you see taking advantage of food stamps? Or Welfare? Those freeloading poor people need to start taking more responsibility. </sarcasm>
