Work today

I finished reading The Wish, by Gail Carson Levine, on the train into work today. As I finished it, I noticed a little girl, maybe about ten or so, glasses, standing next to me, looking at the cover of the book.

I said, "It's by the author of Ella Enchanted." She said, "Oh, neat!" "It's about a girl who gets a wish and wishes to be the most popular girl in middle school, and she does -- but middle school is going to be over in three weeks. . . "

Anyway, work was surprisingly busy. I was working the sleepy little Commonwealth Lounge (new motto: "The remodelling of the Comm Lounge will begin next week!" Let me put it this way: when people ask me when the remodelling will be done, I tell them, "Valentine's Day. I was told they were going to start work beginning of February, and be done by Valentine's Day, and I see no reason to change my story now.") There's NEVER anyone in the Comm Lounge.

Also, since the Harvard Club is a no-tipping club, nobody tips in the Comm Lounge.

Anyway, first night I worked there this week, it was slow, and I made $7 in tips. Last night, the guy who gave me a $5 tip wandered in, asked for a glass of water, which I got for him, and he gave me another $5. For a glass of water. As you might guess, I KNOW this guy's face, now, and, even if he never gives me another tip as long as he lives, he and his guests will get VIP service from me.

Tonight, Dr. Marino showed up with a few friends. Maybe ten of them. Dr. Bruno Marino is the guy, I've mentioned him before, but when they decided to get the flaky whackos out of charge of the Biosphere 2 Project and put actual SCIENTISTS in, he was in charge. He looks like the kond of person that geeks would be intimidated by and everyone else would overlook. I like him a lot.

Among his guests were a woman from the MIT Media Lab, and Keith, the doorman at the club. Who I think I've also mentioned before -- he's the guy that was looking for a good world history, and I suggested the Cartoon History of the World by Larry Gonick. Keith is probably about 25, I guess, a musician, slightly learning disabled, very smart. A lot of the things I like most about myself are traits that he shares -- very curious, tries to surround himself with intelligent and well-educated people from whom to learn. Also among the group were at least two young women who were precisely the type that Keith tends to fall hard for. Smart and Asian.

He ordered a drink for them, "Something good. Sweet. But not weak."

I consider Keith a friend, and I could tell that he wanted to impress them, so I gave this some thought. "I could make something up."

Six-count of Absolut Citron, two-count of sloe gin, half a squeezed lime, served up in a martini glass, garnish with lime wedge.

The first young woman tried it, liked it, gave a sip to the second, who ordered one for herself. All in all, I ended up making four of them.

People seemed to like it.

I tried to catch Keith's eye to let him know we could name it after one of the women he was trying to impress, but I didn't manage to. So it still needs a name. Although I want to, y'know, make it for myself at some point and see what it acutally TASTES like. I know it LOOKS pretty.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to read Ella Enchanted and The Wish.

Gail Levine is the cousin of a good friend of mine.

And someday I'm going to have to try that drink. Sounds good.

Why not name it after the 3 people you made it for. Call it an impressing asian. ^_^ or something like that.

My impish side suggests the Green Edsel: "green" for the lime, and "Edsel" for the "slow lemon".

Didn't realize. What makes it red?

(And I'd probably still call it a Green Edsel. Factory defect and all.)

The sloe gin, I should think.

(Mmm...sloe gin fizz...dammit. Must shower and go to work. No gin at work.)

I'll repeat my suggestion: you invented it on Tax Day -- "red ink"

Southern belles terrify me. I'm not naming a drink after them.
