#%!@#%^ squirrels!

It's 5 am, and Lis and I haven't been able to sleep for hours because of the loud scampering in the walls. We think it's squirrels, because rats and mice are quieter. The animal control people have had traps up for weeks, but it's not helping yet.

OK, this is going to sound weird ...

... but you might look into:

A friend with a persistent squirrels-in-the-walls problem finally solved it with a few drops of fox piss on a cotton ball, dropped down into the hole the squirrels were using for access. Said she never smelled it, but evidently the squirrels did ...

How effective would it be if we stuck an old litterbox near where we think they're entering?

Well, you won't lose anything by trying!

My only concern would be that the scent might keep them from coming *out* ... Hmmmm ... do they vacate the walls during the day to forage for food?

I believe so.
It certainly sounds as if they're gone, given how noisy they are when they make their presence known, and how silent that area is the other 23 hours of the day.

Of course, given that where we believe they're entering our apartment wall is part of the third floor's fire escape, putting a litterbox up there may not be the friendliest most neighborly move we could make.

Wow.

Thanks to livejournal, we've now found out about such innovative online merchants as http://www.predatorpee.com and http://www.frozenrodents.com.

What will they think of next?

I once lived in a Victorian that had squirrels in the walls. The most traveled wall was the wall next to the bed. The squirrels would be most active in the walls in the winter, as they spent more time indoors as it grew cool. The landlady would do nothing about them; she only put enough money into the place to keep it habitable. The place had long since been paid for and she was making a ton of money from us renters, nearly all pure profit.
