Casablanca

Lis and I are watching Casablanca on DVD right now, listening to Roger Ebert's commentary track, so we're paying more attention to how shots are composed and stuff like that.

Victor and Ilsa just walked in the Rick's Cafe Americian, and the camera is tracking them as they walk through. The camera pans over the bar. I say, "Ooh! Irish Mist!"

I blink, and hold my head as I realize the true pathos of what just said. No, not pathos. Patheticness. There's a difference.

We freeze frame and I point out to Lis the Irish Mist, Martini and Rossi vermouth, Drambuie, and Johnnie Walker. "Johnnie Walker Black Label. No, wait. It's a black and white movie. It could be Johniie Walker anything-Label, actually."

Oy.

For what it's worth, I don't think that's pathetic; I think it's kind of cool that you actually *noticed* the details making up the movie. Or that scene, anyway.

It's a liqueur made out of Irish whiskey and honey, largely. It's in a distinctively shaped bottle.

All these identifications were done from recognizing the shapes of the bottles, you must understand. There's never a clear shot of the bottles; you can't read them.

I was going by the shapes of the bottles.

I worked in the pet industry (grooming and boarding) for three and a half years. We see a movie with a dog, and I identify the breed automatically. We see dogs out on the street, and I judge how long since their last cut.

It's a sickness concomitant with being an information-gathering being.

I've been in dog training and breeding my entire life, so I'm okay with people of all races, colors and creeds generally, but when I see a dog out on the street I immediately identify the breed and, based on that, judge the owner harshly.

Hey, be glad it only snags you occasionally. As a graphic designer, I spend most of the credits identifying the font used -- and deciding which fonts would have been better choices.
