Yesterday, two retired Marines came in and ordered a scotch and soda and a draft Bass ale, and sat at the bar, and talked about the Pacific campain and the early days of Vietnam, and friends they'd lost, both in action and to age, and about how arbitrary decorations sometimes seemed, and about veterans' benefits, and so forth. And about the comment, "If I'm hit, you're in charge of the battalion." The gentleman drinking the scotch and soda had probably been twenty years old, and had been a captain for a couple weeks, when the major told him that.
Nobody's deserves to drink on the bartender's tab more than they did.
The Harvard Club is closed today. They've shut down on Nov 11 ever since it was called "Armistice Day", and they see no reason to change that policy.
