. . . I noticed that the Austrailian Project Gutenberg page has a comment that there are works that are public domain in Austrailia but not in the United States, and thus, American sites are blocked from downloading those.
If a work is public domain in one country and not in another, then the country in which it is under copyright is at a competitive disadvantage in creative works. The purpose of copyright laws is to make a country STRONGER in creative works, and the copyright laws as set up now are demonstrably doing the opposite.

That means that there has to be a profit in making public domain works available in convenient formats. That means that people should be willing to pay a buck or two to get copies of public domain works. That means that I should be wiiling to pay a buck or two to get Robinson Crusoe.
