. . . I noticed that the Austrailian Project Gutenberg page has a comment that there are works that are public domain in Austrailia but not in the United States, and thus, American sites are blocked from downloading those.

If a work is public domain in one country and not in another, then the country in which it is under copyright is at a competitive disadvantage in creative works. The purpose of copyright laws is to make a country STRONGER in creative works, and the copyright laws as set up now are demonstrably doing the opposite.

I'd seen that, but I didn't want to pay the $1.75 they charge for the book. Instead, I wanted to find a free program to convert text or HTML to .doc, and get a free Project Gutenberg copy and get it all for free, because I'm too cheap to pay a couple bucks.

Then I started thinking. I want ebooks to succeed. That means that publisher/distributers need to make money putting out ebooks. That means that there has to be a profit in making public domain works available in convenient formats. That means that people should be willing to pay a buck or two to get copies of public domain works. That means that I should be wiiling to pay a buck or two to get Robinson Crusoe.
