Oh, I meant to mention something about martinis

Louis explained to me why people order "extra dry martinis" instead of just ordering "a glass of gin straight up". And I actually can respect it.

It's because a martini is a double, but only usually costs about 50% more than a single shot. So you get more booze for your money! And I can respect that!

I think a kiss of vermouth can alter the taste fairly well, at least, on a vodka martini. Plus, I like 'em with an olive, so that alters things too.
