1. Just a note for folks who live in or near Melrose: Number One Taste, the Chinese takeout place right next to the Melrose Highlands train station, has really icky food. Bleah.

2. Speaking of gross things, Dave and I snaked out the slow drain on the first floor. Well, Dave did most of the work -- but I think I actually was the one who got the clog out. Eeeew. My hands still smell bad after scrubbing them four times.

The best investment I've made as a homeowner was a 144-count box of Nitril gloves. From removing the mummified 'possum I found under the kitchen porch (now *that* was ... surprising) to countless plumbing and cleaning jobs, they have drastically reduced the "ick" factor in my life.

At least "Number One Taste" is truth in advertising.

You're sure your hands smell bad from the snake and not the food?

There's a Chinese takeout place on Trapelo Road in Belmont, also called "Number One Taste," also with really icky food. I detect a trend, if not a chain.

We knew when we moved into the area that "Number One Taste" did not look or smell promising. We lived half a mile away for more than 18 months, without considering ordering anything from them. But then a guest (someone's mother, which made her hard to argue with), wanted to try it. Oops.

If you're in that area, and looking for cheap takeout from unpromising-looking local storefronts..."Chicken Express - And Fish" is a pleasant surprise. The
chicken is quite good. We usually referred to the place as "slow fish."

There's a Number One Taste in Melrose, and they're just fine.

I disagree with the "just fine" assesment. The Peking Ravs were doughy and poorly spiced, and the meat was overly chewey, the hot and sour soup was just off, hitting the wrong notes with vinegar and, I think, poor spicing choices, and, according to Lis, the wonton soup broth was bland and watery, while the wontons themselves were flimsy and light on filling.

Even the fortune cookies, which are pre-packaged, were slightly stale.

If it was just one item, I'd be willing to write it off to a bad night. But when EVERYTHING is off, that makes me suspect it's the place itself.

I mean, we ate the stuff anyway, and we didn't get sick or anything. But there are better choices nearby.

We've been reasonably happy with them, but I'd be interested in trying local places that you like better. Who are they?

Splash after-shave on your hands, then rinse. (Aqua-Velva is the recommended brand, but I think almost anything *should* work. Worth a try, anyway.)
