I built a shelf.
Oct. 13th, 2003 04:59 pmLis and I decided that we should move our booze out of the front room and closer to the downstairs kitchen. So I built a shelving unit.
I built a shelving unit!
It seems to work great. Okay, it's a little smaller than we need -- we can just barely not fit all our booze on it, because, I guess, I misjudged the amount of shelf space we'd need, and I remembered later that we'd been talking about making two of the shelves 13 inches and 15 inches, not 12" and 16", but, we decided to remove the bottom shelf, and I started unscrewing it with my screw gun, while Lis watched the bottles to make sure they didn't fall off. . . they didn't even move -- the level of liquid in the bottles didn't even slosh. . . this is a much more sturdy shelf unit than I'd thought it might turn out. . .

Clarification
Date: 2003-10-13 02:00 pm (UTC)Oh, he also forgot to mention
Date: 2003-10-13 06:16 pm (UTC)When we first put the shelves up in their place, he took out a marble and set it on the shelf to see which way it rolled to determine where it was unbalanced. It sat perfectly still.
Ian and I gaped.
Then, I first walked past the shelves and then bounced past the shelves and the marble continued to just sit there. Perfectly level.
Of course, we bought cheap-ish wood, so the marble placed in other locations on the shelves did roll (generally towards one of the side walls, rather than forward which might indicate a tipping problem), but that first marble was remarkably stable.
Good job!

Date: 2003-10-13 02:18 pm (UTC)Any minute now, you'll start buying those anniversary presents for Lis that look promising and then turn out to be elaborately packaged drill-bit sets. Then all you need to be a home handyman is fancy leather tool belt and a can of beer. ;)
Seriously, I'm proud of you. Home improvement stuff is never as easy as you think it will be.

Date: 2003-10-13 04:06 pm (UTC)Dispose of it. One shot-glass at a time :-)
Good for you.
I'm all out of room to put more shelves. Unless of course, I take down the rest of the stuff hanging on my walls (no way, man).
