Of course, in all fairness, baggy clothes (such as a kittel) really DO make one look fatter than one actually is... otherwise, how would it have occurred to the kid to say it?

Yes, although I think "Ian" is supposed to be more directly related to "John" than "Jon[athan]". And "John" actually derives instead from the nowadays-less-common Hebrew name Yochanan. Still, in this case, Y'honatan == Ian for sure. :-)

I was born with the name Yochanan. I changed it before I became Bar Mitzvah, because I prefered the name Y'honatan. But I didn't make a corresponding change to my English name, because I like "Ian" just fine.
