I use the Shure MPA-3c, which is basically a headphone extension cable that happens to have a mic and control button included. It works fine with my random over-the-ear retractable-cord headphones. (Amusing note: Amazon reviews of the Shure say "it makes the cable too long"; Amazon reviews of my headphones say "the cable is too short". The combination works nicely.)
