Fruit flies like brandy, and can fly through the open part of a speed pourer.

Now I get why a) most places I've worked have a "take the speed-pourers out and re-cap the bottles at the end of the night" policy, and b) the few that didn't have those speed pourers with the mesh on the end.

Fortunately, it was a bottle of the CHEAP kind of brandy that you only use for mixing.

Ants can get through the lids of maple syrup jugs. We keep it in the fridge now.

So did you just pour it through a coffee filter and serve protein-enhanced mixing brandy, or what? ;)

I asked a friend who worked in a fruitfly lab how they got rid of the flies that got away. He said they put a funnel into a nearly-empty bottle of brandy and left it out.

slugs like alcohol, also - to get rid of slugs in the garden, put out a cup of beer - they will slither in to drink the beer, get drunk, and drown - oh, dear, there are some things I wish I didn't know!
