Is there a way to disable further comments on an entry without deleting existing ones? I've been getting 15+ comment-spams a day to some of my entries -- and they're entries with great conversations on them.

I've been deleting each one, and marking it as spam, but the spammers can create new LJ accounts faster than the administrators can delete them -- if they even DO delete the spam accounts. Especially since it seems clear that the spam accounts are robo-accounts, auto-creating and auto-posting.

So I want to lock down the posts that the robots have found, but I don't want to lose the comments on them.

Is that possible?

Make them friends-only?

Or use this: "How do I control who can post comments in my journal?" That might help.

you can restrict commenting to friends-only, with comments being either screened or blocked from non-friends.

Ooh, or if it's available on a per post basis, just include the captcha?

It looks like the best you can do is make them friends-only and/or screened. (Friends-only should be sufficient to block robo-spam.) If you disable comments on an entry, it will hide existing comments: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=23

I just added the captcha globally, for non-friends-list commenters. There are three or four posts that get the robo-spam. I'd rather, as you say, add it just to the one post, but I don't see a way to do it.

If bikergeek's suggestion of friends' locking the entire post doesn't do it, then make a filter group, put all of your friends in it. Then filter lock the post.

I added the captcha for non-members in [livejournal.com profile] davis_square to get rid of a similar problem there.

I don't think that's available per post, only globally. However, it should be a sufficient solution.

Edit them to put them behind a friendslock?

Am I evil for wanting to reply:

V14gr4 and C14ll1S cheap for nigerian millionaires who really want to give you money if you just go to a URL of ponies?

Am I evil that I very nearly deleted that comment and marked it as spam?

not at all. I was trying for spam parody, but I knew that by starting with mangled drug names, I was risking triggering your wetware spam filter.

Am I evil for being curious about which posts?

The one that gets the most is the Octopus Intelligent Design Theory one, probably because it's the one which is most linked to from other sites.

I guess that makes sense... what a pain though, with posts that are that old, to have to keep going back and clean them out.
