Sorry, I didn't mean to come off all "notes are for everyone". Definitely you should do what works for you. Sometimes I have to restrain myself with the notes, because if I'm not careful, I do go into "transcribing" mode, which isn't as much fun as "taking it all in" mode.
There have been a few times when I heard lectures on Saturday, and since I'm a sabbath-observant Jew, I will not take notes then. I find that if it's a really good lecture, I can actually remember a fair bit about the lecture later. It helps if I retell it, because then that helps put it into longer-term memory, I guess.
