I saw the movie Rocky for the first time today

Because I'd always intended to see it; it's one of those movies which everyone is supposed to have seen, and the library had it, so I checked it out and watched it.

It's a pretty darned good movie, isn't it?

Here's a trivia question for you, and if I had a paid account, I'd do this as a poll:

At the Big Fight at the end of Rocky, who wins, Apollo Creed or Rocky Balboa?

Rocky's trainer throws in the towel. One of the most famous shots in film.

Nope. Not in Rocky. Maybe in the sequel?

Maybe. I haven't seen any of them since, um.

...theatre.

I FAIL THE TEST! *g*

I'm pretty certain that Apollo Creed wins.

I think so too. Been a looong time since I saw it, though. I remember being pleased that it didn't follow the common sports movie paradigm of pluck + heart = victory against all odds.

But it did! It's just that Rocky defined "victory" as "actually standing up at the end of the fight, and losing by decision rather than knockout."

He did win against all odds. The Vegas odds were "knockout in third round or before." He lost after fifteen rounds.

Rocky just wanted to finish the fight standing -- and he did. But Apollo Creed won the fight.

It is a pretty good movie, and it's classic Philly, too.

Technically speaking, Apollo won by split decision. However, before the fight Rocky told Adrian that if he could just last the entire fight, even though he knew he'd lose, he'd consider it a win.

Apollo.

Also, the thing won Best Picture for its year.

Don't get me started...

Yeah, beat out Taxi Driver, All the President's Men, Network. and Bound for Glory. Sheesh.

Yeah, I kind of think there were a few other choices the Academy could've made. (Just a few.)

I saw it when it came out at the theatre. I was five at the time.

I remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out. Apollo Creed won. There wasn't much doubt that he would. All Rocky's work was to make it *close*. Which he did.

In the first movie, Apollo wins by judge's decission. In the second movie (the rematch), Rocky wins via last round knockout.
