I have a wife who forced me into treatment.

It DOES look like [insert moral failing here]. It still does, sometimes. You can't get out of that until you've had breaks where you can see it from the other side.

I don't think it's possible to percieve it as anything other than [insert moral failing here], until and unless you are under treatment. What that treatment is differs for different people -- I know some people who manage to control their depression with B-vitamin suppliments (apparently, B vitamins are a precursor to seratonin, so, for a small number of people, simply getting more B vitamins in their systems can do enough to make a difference).

Personally, I don't believe that talk therapy alone will help for depressives like me. Sure, we can find reasons why we're depressed -- but we perceive that as simply, "Oh -- so that's WHY I'm [insert moral failing here]," and it simply serves to reinforce the idea that we are moral failures. Now we just know HOW we became such fucked-up useless wastes of carbon.

(Note the "like me", in the paragraph above. There are also depressives who are NOT like me, for whom talk therapy may well help.)
