So, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony and Grammy winning musical IN THE HEIGHTS, is getting a lot of buzz for his new musical, which just moved from off-Broadway to Broadway. It's based on a real person, who Miranda feels epitomizes the hip-hop narrative.
The main character is born out-of-wedlock in the Caribbean; he's got nothing, and, after his mother dies, he's got less than nothing, so, as a teenager, he makes it to New Jersey on his own, then joins the military to get out of there, and, basically, claws his way out of poverty, getting more and more power, wealth, popularity, and fame, but pissing people off so badly that one of them shoots him dead.
The guy was so money that he is ON money. Alexander Hamilton.
We've been listening to some of the YouTube clips of this, because Lis has been telling me to, and I originally though, "Oh, ha, very funny, what a clever joke, hip-hop Founding Father, yeah."
But now -- no, the music's good, and Miranda is RIGHT about this whole thing. It really fits.
Also, I was charmed by the clip of Miranda, in rehearsals, wearing a shirt which read "BURR SHOT FIRST."
