A little update on the Boston Light swim.
Aug. 12th, 2010 06:09 pmThe organizers of the swim obviously can't swim on Saturday, because, well, they'll be running things. So they decided to swim it today, instead. But, y'know, swimming from Boston Light to Dorchester would be too easy. So they decided to swim from the L Street Bathhouse to the Boston Light on Little Brewster and back, a total of sixteen miles.
This has only been done three times before, most recently in 1969. The record time set then was 9.5 hours for sixteen miles.
They were hoping to beat this time. They were hoping to beat this time bad. Their boast was that they were going to do the sixteen miles in eight hours, beating the standing record by an hour and a half.
They came in at 7h 07m. They beat the record by almost TWO AND A HALF HOURS.
That's crazy.
For the record: the English Channel at the Straits of Dover is about 21 miles, and the record is under seven hours, so these aren't times that are going to be broadcast worldwide or so -- managing sixteen miles at over two miles an hour is crazy good, but the world record is managing 21 miles at over three miles an hour.
