At the LJ party, I finally got a chance to ask Dr. Jordin Kare a question I'd wondered for a while.
"Dr. Kare," I asked, "how do you and your wife deal with the fact that you're both fictional, but in different universes?"
He grinned and said, "Well, we do meet in some other universes regularly. You know how it is -- we met in a short story, and fell in love. . . in my case, it's a pretty simple story -- it all has to do with having Ferdinand Feghoot as a thesis advisor. . . "
(Jordin Kare is a character in a Honor Harrington novel, and Mary Kay Kare is a character in a Spider Robinson novel. Spider put her in one of the Callahan's books because he had a spot for someone who could search out information on the 'net, and she's a librarian, and in a charity auction, David Webber offered a walk-on role in a book, and Mary Kay Kare bought it for her husband. At that point, David Webber noticed that his plot actually required an astrophysicist, and Jordin Kare's role was significantly more than a walk-on. . .)
