We're back from Florida.
Mar. 18th, 2004 01:21 pmWe came back from Florida Tuesday night. It was snowing in New Hampshire where our plane was to land, so the plane was two hours late. We got home at midnight instead of around ten as we intended.
Last night I worked at the Commonwealth Lounge. Towards the start of my shift, the phone rang. A woman asked for Kevin, who's the usual Comm Lounge bartender. He was working a function. (Comm Lounge is fairly boring, so John's been trying to move people around, so that they don't have to do the boring job all the time.) She said that she had been talking to him about coming in and playing the piano in the lounge, and I said that that should probably be fine.
Keith was the doorman last night, so I got to talk to him a fair bit -- the Comm Lounge is right next to the front door, so he comes in to chat and stuff. He's an interesting guy; I like him. He's been working on a college degree for some time now; he's got some learning disabilities, so it takes him a while, but he's not stupid, and he is determined. There are a lot of professors, scientists, teachers, and so forth who are members of the Harvard Club, and Keith isn't shy about talking to them, shmoozing with them, getting them to recommend books and so forth. Naturally, they don't mind, since professors, teachers, and scientists, on the whole, really LIKE to teach people and help people learn stuff.
He was asking people for a good book on American history, to put history in context, because he got lost with trying to figure out how things interrelated. I mentioned Howard Zinn's book, but then I also mentioned Larry Gonick's "Cartoon History of the Universe." The person Keith was talking to taught World History to eleventh-graders, and is going to look up Gonick's stuff and see if it's useful.
Actually, now that I look at it, Gonick HAS done a "Cartoon History of the United States." I'll let Keith know that tonight.
The woman who phoned showed up, and she played wonderfully.
That's most of it. I'm not writing well today. I wonder why.
