It occured to me that today is one of my favorite unheralded holidays of the American calendar. Today is "Cooking for Thanksgiving Day." At least, it is for me.

I'm able to just be standing in the kitchen, making up cranberry pie, and sweet potato crunch, and watching the snow fall outside the window (occasionally going out to shovel), and realizing that there are times that I just like to be alone. Lis is out doing stuff, and I have the house to myself, able to just cook, and post to livejournal, and think about my family and stuff in general.

I like having this day to myself to prepare myself for having a day with lots of people. I love my family, and I love being around people I love. But I also am discovering that I love being with myself, sometimes.

And that's something I'm thankful for. I'm thinking about a friend of mine who has a lot of trouble just being by himself, and feeling great sympathy for him, and realizing that, although that used to be true of me, and still is sometimes true of me, it's not right now -- and, right now, I can really enjoy this.

So, that's how I'm celebrating "Cooking for Thanksgiving Day."

Okay, so maybe it's no Rabid Badger Sniffing Day, but I still think that "Cooking For Thanksgiving Day" is a pretty neat holiday.

I'm someone who appreciates occasional personal quietude. Quite restful but occasional difficult to get to when alone, and it usually requires alone-ness.

BTW, you might want to check out the food porn LJ community.

All Hail Rabid Badger Sniffing Day!

Sweet-potato crunch? Oh, *do* tell!

I'm working today, but the campus is nice and quiet, and there's a bake sale downstairs (Mmmm, macadamia-nut cookies for lunch), and tonight is the Ritual Baking Of The Pies, with the pleasing prospect of having my sweetie and his wife help with the baking. So I guess I get Cooking For Thanksgiving Eve, which seems like a perfectly nice holiday, too.

It's a recipe my father-in-law got from a restaurant in New Orleans; it's one of their signature dishes. So I don't want to get too specific about it. It's not one of the Secret Family Recipes, I don't think, but I'm not entirely sure. But you take mushed-up sweet potatoes and you add stuff to it (eggs, cream, butter, sugar, salt, stuff. . . )

Then you've got a topping for it which is brown sugar and chopped up pecans and stuff.

It's so incredibly bad for you, and it's always a huge hit when I make it.

Fair enough

That gives me enough information to improvise, thanks.

I reallyreally *hate* the canonical over-candied, marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes, so anytime I encounter an option, my ears perk right up.

The best new sweet potato dish I've tried lately can be found here. - Gingered Parsnip Sweet Potato Pancakes. They're a latke-like pancake (as opposed to a IHOP-like pancake) and just ... delicious!

Enjoy!!!

I'm doing pumpkin pie today and praying that the crusts come out well. Last year I think I made a few on my own for pumpkin pies (and quiche, I think). Once it was awful, twice it was spectacular and the other time or two it was so-so. It should come out ok, but I'm just nervous, LOL! I should practice more often. :)

We're having Thanksgiving with friends this year, so I don't get to cook : < I keep feeling like I should be baking cornbread for stuffing or chopping onions and red peppers (cornbread and red pepper stuffing, yum!). We're bringing mashed yams, but that is [livejournal.com profile] brian1789's dish.

And cooking for Thanksgiving sure beats cleaning up after Thanksgiving dinner.
