I think there were also huge gaps between German Jews and Eastern European Jews. That's the whole "our crowd" syndrome. Part of that may just be when people immigrated (earlier for the Germans), but part of it also had to do with willingness to assimilate.

I also want to make a distinction between Sephardim and Mizrachim, but the latter have never been a big part of the American Jewish landscape.
