Over on Making Light, Jim MacDonald posted about Yet Another Person Making The Author's Big Mistake -- i.e., responding to negative reviews in any other way than "thank you for your time in looking at my work, and I'll certainly take your criticisms on board", and, most of the time, THAT much is a bad idea -- but mixing in some misogynistic bullying for good measure.

As part of the post, he links to Beth Revis's post on how to respond to negative reviews, which I will summarize, because I think it generalizes.

If someone dislikes your work, and this hurts you, you should go to amazon.com, look up your favorite book of all time, and filter for one-star reviews. If eleven THOUSAND people hated HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, is it really surprising that a few people hate YOUR book?

I think this is good advice for anybody, doing anything. It hurts when someone dislikes your creative work, so go and observe for yourself that there are people who dislike even the best works of all time.

*laughs immoderately at Mr. Torcivia*

This comes up a lot in fanficdom, and I think I'll note Ms. Revis' wise post for the next time it does.
