Which is worse?

That my go-to solution when technological things aren't working in my house is "thump it"?

Or that it tends to work?

Neither seems either to me. My excuse explanation is that there's probably a loose connection or an accidental connection, and thumping the thing restores the original state of connectedness or lack thereof.
