I think grief is one example of what xiphias is calling "situational depression," but not the only one. The reactions one might experience to failing a class, breaking up with a loved one for good and necessary reasons, or being laid off from a job would also fall under the heading of "situational depression," and certainly have some features in common with grief, but I don't think one would quite call them "grief."
