I've never seen or heard of one of these before, so I am lacking the social context for it. I'm imagining people lining up politely in suits for their turn to get themselves a drink, and then going off to talk in small groups. I gather that was not how it went at this ... happening.

That's definitely got to be one of the tackiest parties I've ever heard of.
