Although I am also libertarian, I recognize that my distaste for socialized medicine comes from the fact that health care has never been public, so the idea of public health care is strange to me. I don't object to my tax dollars going toward a police force, or firefighting, or even to the ostensible security of the future of the ongoing national conversation that we succinctly call "education"... so why do I feel icky about the public funding of health care, a service that I could suddenly need at any moment, like police or firefighting? Is it because it something that's really better paid privately... or because I'm just not used to the idea that it could be public?
