My poor sister is a manager at a retail store.

She's terribly understaffed, so she's going in to work on her day off. She IS trying to hire more people, but her standards are so high. She requires basic intelligence, some competence, literacy, and a non-flatlined EEG from her employees, and, of the last fifty applications she's gotten, two people made the cut.

"So, one person showed up, and had a resume. And I was all impressed, because, hey, a resume! Her last job was at 'Holliday inn express.' Only the 'h' capitalized, and with two l's in 'Holiday'. And, c'mon -- you're at a freakin' computer. SPELLCHECK! I mean, it doesn't catch everything, but it would have caught THAT."

your poor sister... what's she paying? =)

A question for your sister, if you'd ask.

I'm seriously underemployed at present, working just three days. If I tried to move over from temp secretary work into retail, where I have no experience, could I get a job, allowing for the fact that I'm 52, literate, and intelligent?

She lives in a country that doesn't do a good job of training its Dull Normals.

I took my mom to the MVA yesterday. The pamphelet from the 29th light infantry division had 1 spelling error, 2 grammatical errors, and a couple of spacing problems.

Recently, I had the dubious pleasure of proofreading s transcript of a movie that was transcribed by someone who is in college. The same college I graduated from, interestingly enough. It is so full of spelling errors, grammatical problems (not related to the dialogue) and usage mistakes that I nearly wept for the English language.
