The most disturbing bit of trivia I've learned all day.

Question: What fanatical Jewish extremist was Arlo Gutherie's Hebrew school teacher?

Meier Kahane?

Yup.

Not only do I know the answer, I think I know the book the trivia came from!

Why is this disturbing?

Well, y'know, it's ARLO GUTHERIE. I mean, the idea of the Gutheries in close proximity to right-wing fanatics, voluntarily, and repeatedly, is just WEIRD.

I don't actually know who any of the people you've mentioned are--genuine confusion here.

Oh.

Um. Okay. Arlo Gutherie is Woody Gutherie's son. Arlo Gutherie wrote "Alice's Restaurant", and was a big-name anti-Vietnam war type person. Woody Gutherie wrote "This Land Is Your Land", and was a big-name socialist, pacifist, pro-social-justice type person -- he was against war in general, and was a concientious objector in WWII, but wanted to support the troops, so traveled on the troop ships as an entertainer to help morale. (This, by the way, was just about the most dangerous and unpleasant duty available to him as a non-combatant -- troop ships were often sunk with all hands by U-boats, and were definitely crowded and unpleasant, which is why having someone there to play music and keep folks spirits up was so important.)

Meir Kahane founded the most extremist right-wing party in Israel, and supported the idea of kicking all Arabs out of Israel. He was assasinated in 1990.

I knew what the answer had to be when I saw the question, just on time/generations.

By the way, it's "Guthrie", only one e.

Ahhh...light dawns over marble head. ;)

That definitely fucks with one's head.
