The Ted Chiang short story "The Story of Your Life", is, like all Ted Chiang short stories, too internal, too thinky, and just too abstract to be filmable.

But they did anyway.

And it's brilliant.

I haven't read the short story, but I found the movie very affecting and well made.

I'll admit, I've done a lot of thinking after the movie.

We just saw that this afternoon, in large part out of curiosity about how they were going to translate that story to the screen. Very well done. It's not the same as the story, but we knew going in that it couldn't be so that was not a surprise.

It's not word-for-word the same, of course, but it's truly startling just how similar it is in its general point and tone. It adds more external conflicts and such, but it includes the heart of the story undamaged.
